‘Batsmen do not trust their defence much nowadays’: Punjab Kings Arshdeep Singh on his bowling plans | Ipl News

With five wickets in two matches, Punjab Kings pacer Arshdeep Singh has been among the wickets in the early part of this year’s Indian Premier League. The 26-year-old, who had finished with 19 wickets with an bowling average of 26.08 in last year’s IPL, picked up a wicket yet again in his first over when he removed Mitchell Marsh of Lucknow Super Giants in the team’s away game at Lucknow on Tuesday evening. Kings won the match by eight wickets and Singh, who took three wickets in the match, talked about how batsmen not trusting their defence helps his case.

“As you know nowadays, batsmen do not trust their defence much. They just want to go after the ball. So, I had two slips and a deep cover. So just in case the batsman swings and the ball goes up in the air, there is a fielder for me and I am attacking as well with two slips. The wicket at the end got better and I believe you have to stay till the end,” Singh told IPLT20.

The Punjab pacer has been among wickets in the last two editions of the IPL. While he had a stellar season in IPL in 2021 picking up 18 wickets, Singh finished with 17 wickets in 2023 IPL and 19 wickets in last year’s IPL. The speedster, who was the joint-highest wicket-taker with 17 wickets during India’s World T20 title triumph last year, also talked about his bowling on the red soil pitch at Lucknow. When asked about his three-wicket haul, Singh termed it as an ‘average’ show. “I mean that’s pretty average on a wicket that was giving help to seam bowlers. I feel I could have bowled better and given less runs. So, in the powerplay, the ball was stopping and extra bounce was there. So, there was extra help. We could have hit the lengths for a bit more time and would have been a different score,” Singh added.

Since making his IPL debut, Singh has taken a total of 81 wickets in IPL. The Kharar native has also played in 63 T20Is for India picking up 99 wickets and has the highest number of wickets for India in the shortest format. Earlier this week, Singh had shared about how life has not changed much for him. “Life hasn’t changed much; it’s still the same, but it’s fun. As they say, change is the only constant. Staying stable and managing the highs and lows is crucial when playing at this level. I focus on strengthening my mental resilience and enjoying the present moment. I enjoy stepping up when the team is under pressure—whether it’s stopping runs or taking wickets. When they hand me the ball in crucial moments, it feels good to know that they trust me. I genuinely enjoy the added responsibility, regardless of the situation. I try not to feel the pressure and instead focus on delivering my best for the team. Success doesn’t come overnight, but I ensure that any setbacks don’t affect my bowling. Every time I get another opportunity, I give my all to help the team win,” Arshdeep had said on JioHotstar’s special show ‘Gen Bold’.
