Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati on Thursday said that her party will contest the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections in 2027 on its own, PTI reported.
Speaking at a rally in Lucknow, the former chief minister claimed that no alliance with other parties in earlier elections, especially in Uttar Pradesh, had benefited the Bahujan Samaj Party.
The rally was organised to mark the death anniversary of the Bahujan Samaj Party founder Kanshi Ram.
The Bahujan Samaj Party had contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections on its own as well.
“Our party’s votes get transferred one-sidedly to the alliance partner, but because of their casteist mindset, upper-castes do not transfer to BSP candidates,” PTI quoted Mayawati as saying during the rally. “This is the reality. As a result, our candidates win fewer seats and our overall vote share declines.”
The Bahujan Samaj Party chief also noted that coalition governments in the state involving her party had never lasted their full term.
Mayawati praised Chief Minister Adityanath’s Bharatiya Janata Party government for the upkeep of the memorials and parks dedicated to Dalit icons in the state, which were built during her tenure, The New Indian Express reported.
“I had written to the chief minister urging that ticket proceeds from visitors to these sites be used for their upkeep,” the newspaper quoted her as saying. “The BJP government took a positive approach and bore the maintenance cost. For this, I thank them.”
Mayawati also accused the Samajwadi Party and its chief Akhilesh Yadav of “hypocrisy and double standards”.
“When they are in power, they forget Kanshi Ramji and the PDA [Pichda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak] agenda,” she said. “But once out of power, they remember both. Such two-faced people must be kept away.”
Mayawati also claimed that the Congress was a party of “nautanki [theatrics]” and said that it had historically ignored the interests of Dalits.
“The Congress never awarded Bharat Ratna to Babasaheb Ambedkar,” The New Indian Express quoted her as saying. “Even when Kanshi Ramji passed away [in 2006], neither the Congress-led Centre nor the SP government in Uttar Pradesh [at the time] declared a day of national mourning.”
She added that this “showed their real mindset”.
