
At least 29 persons were killed in a stampede at actor-politician Vijay’s rally in Tamil Nadu’s Karur district on Saturday, The News Minute quoted Health Minister Ma Subramanian as saying.
Children are among the dead, the news outlet reported.
The incident took place at Veluchamy Puram area, where Vijay, the chief of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, was scheduled to address supporters.
Thousands of people, including women and children, had gathered at the venue. The crowd became uncontrollable during his speech, following which several persons fainted, The News Minute reported.
Vijay’s address was interrupted twice as ambulances were brought in to take those who collapsed.
The police resorted to a lathi charge to disperse the crowd after the stampede, The News Minute reported.
Chief Minister MK Stalin said in a social media post that he has directed Subramanian, School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh and senior police officials to reach the spot.
“The news coming from Karur is worrying,” Stalin said.
He added that he had instructed ministers and the district collector to provide “the necessary immediate treatment…on a war footing.”
He also appealed to the public to cooperate with the doctors and the police.
