Assamese singer Zubeen Garg died in a scuba diving accident in Singapore on Friday. He was 52.
Garg was in the country to participate in the North East Festival, a three-day event that was scheduled to begin on Friday.
“It is with deep sadness that we share the news of Zubeen Garg’s passing,” PTI quoted a statement issued by the organisers of the festival. “While scuba diving, he experienced breathing difficulties and was immediately given CPR [cardiopulmonary resuscitation] before being rushed to Singapore General Hospital.”
Garg was declared dead at around 2.30 pm IST.
Shyamkanu Mahanta and Team, Garg’s management team for the event in Singapore, stated that a few members of the local Assamese community had taken Garg out on a yacht.
“On receiving the news [of the accident], our team rushed immediately to the hospital and has since been working closely with the High Commission to complete the necessary procedures,” ANI quoted the statement.
It added that the event was cancelled in light of the development.
Garg, born in 1972 in Meghalaya, primarily worked in the Assamese, Bengali and Hindi-language film and music industries. The Assamese singer had sung in more than 40 languages and dialects.
In 2006, he sang Ya Ali from the Hindi film Gangster, which made him a nationwide success. Among other prominent Hindi songs by him are Subah Subah and Kya Raaz Hai.
Assamese singer Papon described Garg as the “voice of a generation”
“At a loss of words!” he said on social media. “Lost a friend. Lost a brother. A big void.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that Garg will be remembered for his rich contribution to music.
“His renditions were very popular among people across all walks of life,” the prime minister said on social media. “Condolences to his family and admirers.”
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said that Garg’s voice defined a generation, adding that his talent was unmatched.
“The passing of Zubeen Garg is a terrible tragedy,” the leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha said. “He overcame personal tragedies to reshape the landscape of Assamese music. His perseverance and courage have left an enduring mark. He will live on in our hearts and minds forever.”
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described Garg as the state’s “favourite rockstar”.
“Today, Assam lost one of its favourite sons,” the Bharatiya Janata Party leader said on social media. “Zubeen’s voice had an unmatched ability to energise people and his music spoke directly to our minds and souls. He has left a void that will never be filled.”
