If you were hoping to see more AI news at Apple’s WWDC event later today, think again. According to the latest issue of Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter, the Apple insider claims that Apple might wait until iOS 27 before releasing two AI-enhanced apps.
AI-enhanced apps only coming in iOS 27
The rumors have long established that iOS 26 will not introduce any major or significant upgrades to Apple Intelligence. Instead, Apple was supposed to introduce more AI integration in some of its native apps. However, assuming the report is accurate, Apple is delaying the launch of a couple of AI-enhanced apps until iOS 27, which is only set for release next year.
According to Gurman, these AI-enhanced apps are Calendar and Health. Neither of these apps will be mentioned at WWDC. Gurman does not say why Apple is delaying the release, so we can only speculate why. Perhaps the AI features of these apps are simply not up to scratch yet, and Apple is hoping to avoid even more negative press about its AI efforts.
However, this doesn’t mean we won’t see other AI-enhanced apps this year. The report claims that Apple will apply AI upgrades to other parts of iOS 26. This includes an AI-powered battery optimization mode and Shortcuts. We’ll have to wait for the announcement to get a better idea of what these changes mean for these apps.
Apple’s AI efforts thus far
Apple was already late to the game when it launched Apple Intelligence. Google, Samsung, OpenAI, and other companies already released AI-powered products and services. So, it’s safe to say that many had hoped Apple Intelligence would bring Apple up to par with the competition.
Unfortunately, that’s hardly the case. Apple made huge promises at WWDC last year, but it fell short of the mark. So far, many iOS users have slammed Apple Intelligence. Apple was also supposed to give Siri a much-needed AI upgrade, but that has yet to materialize.
That being said, while it’s concerning that Apple has fallen this far behind in the AI race, not everyone thinks it matters. Analyst Gene Munster recently claimed that Apple still has a couple of years to play catch-up. This might also explain why, for WWDC this year, Apple will focus on revamping the UI of iOS 26 instead of doubling down on AI features.
