Apple Targets Improved Call Clarity With iPhone 17 Pro Earpiece Redesign

Call quality isn’t something most of us pay attention to on our smartphones these days. This isn’t to say it isn’t vital, but rather, technology has come a long way where, for the most part, the call quality of modern-day smartphones is pretty decent. However, Apple thinks there’s room for improvement. This is why, according to a new rumor, Apple could increase the earpiece size on both the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models.

Longer earpiece for the iPhone 17 Pro

According to a post on X by DuanRui, they claim that the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models will come with a longer earpiece. The larger earpiece means that we could see an improvement in call clarity, which is good news. We should note that the call quality on Apple’s iPhones are already pretty good, like most smartphones out there.

However, any and all improvements are obviously welcome. But in addition to better call clarity, the folks at Wccftech point out that this change could also bring about better audio in general. This is because Apple uses the earpiece of the iPhone as a speaker as well, in addition to bottom-firing speakers.

This allows Apple to create a pseudo-surround sound effect. A larger earpiece means a larger speaker, so we should see improvements in audio quality as well. Note that the rumor only points at the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models. This means there’s a good chance the base iPhone 17 and new iPhone 17 Air models will sit this one out.

What we know so far

Apple’s iPhone 17 series will launch later this year. Apple hasn’t confirmed the dates yet, but there’s a good chance we’re looking at a September launch. The iPhone 17 lineup will consist of four models: the base iPhone 17, the Pro and Pro Max models, and a brand new addition in the form of the iPhone 17 Air.

The iPhone 17 Air will replace the Plus model and introduce a new ultra-thin design. The base iPhone 17 will retain the same looks as the previous gen models. However, the Pro and Pro Max models could see a redesign of the camera module. Leaked dummy units and renders have revealed a larger camera module that stretches across the back of the phone.

It’s an interesting design that some have pointed out greatly resembles Google’s Pixel phones. If you’re hoping for a more drastic overhaul, you might have to wait until 2026 or 2027.
