Apple Raked In B In US App Store Commissions Last Year

It’s not hard to see why Apple is so resistant to allowing developers to use third-party payment services or directing users outside of the App Store. It’s because, according to Appfigures, Apple made $10 billion in App Store commissions in the US in 2024. Yup, that’s a lot of money Apple will have to give up.

According to Appfigures, Apple’s App Store commissions in the US have increased every year. In 2020, Apple made around $4.76 billion. This was followed by $6.67 billion in 2021, $7.37 billion in 2022, $8.76 billion in 2023, and a whopping $10.1 billion in 2024.

Based on this trajectory, it stands to reason that in 2025, Apple could earn even more than that. Note that these figures are only for the US market. Globally, Appfigures estimates that Apple took in $91.3 billion in 2024. It also explains why, despite a court ruling, Apple defied the judge’s orders and continued to collect commissions from developers even though they used an outside payment service for in-app purchases and subscriptions.

Apple’s greed knows no bounds

Just to give you a little idea of how greedy Apple is being, the Cupertino company takes a cut of roughly 30% from in-app purchases and subscriptions. Yes, the firm provides a place for developers to distribute their apps. The problem comes when Apple also prevents third-party app stores. Basically, Apple itself reserves the monopoly on the distribution of apps on its devices.

Not everyone feels that way, however. It is one of the reasons why companies like Epic Games took Apple to court over those fees. Games like Fortnite were raking in millions, thanks to the efforts of the developers at Epic. Apple simply distributed the app, and yet, the company took a cut anyway.

Apple is currently appealing the court’s latest decision. If it’s successful, developers will have no choice but to continue allowing Apple to take a cut from their work. However, 100,000 developers have filed a class action lawsuit against Apple. They are all pursuing damages for the money Apple withheld from them, despite receiving orders not to do so.
