Apple Laughed Off Foldables, That’s Exactly What they Did Before the iPad Too

Apple’s WWDC was this week, where Apple brought in about 1,200 people to Apple Park for WWDC. While the keynote on Monday is what got all of the attention, the media in attendance has been in briefings, interviews, and doing podcasts all week in a studio that Apple has set up.

One of those interviews is from Joanna Stern of The Wall Street Journal, who interviewed Craig Federighi, the head of Apple’s software, and Greg Joswiak, who is the head of Apple’s marketing. These two are probably the most popular faces of Apple, behind CEO Tim Cook. Of course, Stern asked both about Siri, kinda like a mother asking why their child didn’t do something. But she also asked about a foldable.

Federighi and Joswiak sort of laughed it off, saying “it would break, wouldn’t it?” and capping off the segment with “who’s to say?”. Which sort of confirms that Apple is at least working on a foldable.

With the current economic climate of tariffs, which are changing nearly daily, there has been a lot of talk about Apple increasing the price of the iPhone when it launches this fall. Stern did ask both Federighi and Joswiak about a price increase, which they didn’t want to talk about yet. Joswiak said, “Nothing to announce now,” and quickly tried to turn the attention back to software. He also mentioned that Apple is waiting to see where things settle out, in terms of tariffs.

Federighi then chimes in saying, “Our software upgrades are free and untariffed”.

That’s actually an interesting point, because software upgrades didn’t used to be free. Back in 2009, around the beginning of the iPhone, Apple used to charge for Mac OS X and iOS updates, and even charged for a couple iOS upgrades, which were pretty cheap. Including a $2 cost for updating to WiFi 802.11 n on your iPhone. The entire OS update was $9.95, or $10.55 with tax included.
