Summary: Apple officially addressed and fixed some pretty big vulnerabilities that affected some of its operating systems. These could cause remote code execution.
No matter how many years of software development a platform goes through, there will always be vulnerabilities. There’s always some hole in the software that hackers and other malicious actors exploit for their own needs. Most people argue that Apple’s software is the most secure, but even that company’s operating systems aren’t immune to hacks.
The company just addressed some pretty major vulnerabilities across a handful of its operating systems. These are pretty serious, so you’ll want to make sure to update your software as soon as possible.
Apple fixed two major vulnerabilities in its operating systems
The operating systems affected are iOS 18.4.1, iPadOS 18.4.1, macOS Sequoia 15.4.1, tvOS 18.4.1, and Apple Vision Pro. Apple pointed out two major vulnerabilities with these platforms, and it said that they were exploited in an “extremely sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals.”
That’s unfortunate, but the good news is that they’ve been patched. One vulnerability allowed someone with arbitrary read and write capabilities to bypass the Pointer Authentication.
The other vulnerability is a bit of an odd one. This one affected AudioCore. The bad actor made a certain audio file that, when played, would enable code execution on the device. So, it shows that there’s no limit to how a person can hack a device.
As stated, Apple has fixed these vulnerabilities, so you should update your devices as soon as you can. These affect iPhones, iPads, Apple TV devices, Mac computers, and Apple Vision Pros. Since Apple said that these were used to attack targeted users, it would be tempting to hesitate, but there’s no telling if other bad actors want to take advantage of these exploits.
The two vulnerabilities listed above may not be the only ones present in the operating systems. So, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
