Android 16 to debut on Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 7

Devices like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 will be among the first phones to come with Android 16 out of the box, though we’ll see the latest version of Android hitting Pixel devices before anything else. However, Samsung is set to deliver a fresh experience with its upcoming foldable phones. These are slated to launch later this Summer, which easily puts them toward the front of the line for running on the upcoming version of Android.

Rumors about the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 coming with Android 16 at launch popped up at the beginning of last month. This seemed likely at the time, given Google’s release schedule for new versions of Android going forward. Now, though, this rumor is no longer a rumor, as Samsung has confirmed its new foldable will be launching with One UI 8.

Samsung confirms Android 16 will be on the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 at launch

Today, in a newsroom post, Samsung announced the launch of the One UI 8 beta program. This new version of software is built on Android 16, which is currently going through its final beta stages for Pixel devices.

Samsung says it worked closely with Google to ensure One UI 8 was one of the first UI platforms to adopt the latest version of Android. “Through open communication, Samsung and Google actively shared their respective design systems and real-time feedback with one another, accelerating software development that made One UI 8 one of the first UI platforms to adopt Android 16,” Samsung said. This might also suggest Samsung plans to continue this method of quicker rollouts.

While Android 16 on Samsung devices will begin with the latest foldables this Summer, it won’t take long to hit other devices. Samsung says that One UI 8 will expand to more Samsung Galaxy devices soon after. This expansion will be gradual, however. Basically, it’s highly likely that the newest phones are going to get the software first. So if you’re on an older Galaxy model, you might still have to wait a little while.

Here’s why this is a big deal

Samsung, alongside several other manufacturers, has routinely taken considerably longer to update its devices to new versions of Android. That isn’t happening with Android 16. As Samsung seems committed to bringing the software to its users much sooner than usual.

This could be a pretty big deal because it might suggest that Samsung plans to do this with other devices in the future. So, when Android 17 comes out, it may end up launching new phones with it and the next version of One UI. That would end up being a big deal for Samsung users. It might even convince people to switch to Samsung if it meant faster updates. Especially now that Samsung is committed to supporting software updates for seven years.
