Analyst predicts Nintendo Switch 2 will have slow adoption

Summary: The Nintendo Switch 2 is predicted to have a slower adoption curve due to its “modest technical upgrades” and rumored higher price point. The console is expected to launch at around $399, although some believe its price could be higher and closer to $499. It’s also expected by some analysts to “sell boatloads in its first months.”

The Nintendo Switch 2 has the potential to be a huge success for Nintendo, but not everyone believes the adoption curve will be rapid. Nintendo is set to share more about the Switch 2 console at its upcoming Nintendo Direct livestream event on April 2. This is when the company is expected to share most of if not all, the remaining relevant details about the hardware. So far Nintendo has revealed the Switch 2 and officially announced it, but it has yet to share anything about it regarding official specifications, release date, or price.

When it comes to the cost, the Switch 2 will almost certainly be more than the Switch OLED. It has a bigger display and it’s suspected to be close to the Steam Deck’s performance. Those hardware and performance upgrades will undoubtedly come with a higher price tag. And it’s that higher price tag that has some predicting the Nintendo Switch 2 will have a slower adoption rate by consumers. The cost isn’t the only factor, however.

The Nintendo Switch 2 adoption curve will be slow

According to SuperData Research co-founder Joost van Dreunen, consumers will be slower to adopt the Switch 2 as some look to upgrade. Van Dreunen believes that the console’s backward compatibility and the “relatively modest technical improvements,” will play a major role in the console having a slower adoption curve.

“No. The backward compatibility of the Nintendo Switch 2, combined with its relatively modest technical improvements, ensures a slower adoption curve, especially among cost-conscious consumers during the start of its new hardware cycle. It is expected to cost around $399 at launch,” Van Dreunen said in his State of Play on Gaming in 2025 report.

This is in contrast to the opinions of other analysts who believe Nintendo will sell boatloads in its first months after release.

The console is still believed to be around $399

On the topic of cost, Nintendo could price the Switch 2 around $399 at launch. This would put it about $50 above the cost of the Switch OLED and it’s a reasonable price increase for what the technical upgrades are thought to be. Van Dreunen mentions that the console is expected to be around this price, and others share that sentiment. However, it was also recently suggested that it could end up costing well over that price.

In the report from last week, it was predicted that the Nintendo Switch 2 could end up costing closer to $499.
