The gaming world recently witnessed a major surprise with the announcement of Arc System Works’ MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls.his new title, which premiered at the State of Play event, has Arc System, Marvel Games, and PlayStation Studios working on it together. Arc System Works has accorded its stylish anime fighting series treatment to the Marvel Universe, with games that include Street Fighter, Guilty Gear, BlazBlue, and Dragon Ball FighterZ. MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls should see a 2026 release. It will be available on PS5, Steam, and Epic Games Store (PC). While not officially confirmed, cross-play between PC and consoles is safely assumed.
Core Gameplay Experience
The last time we had seen a great fighting game that the heroes from Marvel were a part of was the Capcom vs Marvel series, and it seems that the game borrows the tag team fighting system from it. The development team purposefully chose a 4v4 format to create “over-the-top moments” and to further evolve the tag fighting genre, reflecting the appeal of seeing the vast cast of Marvel characters come together. Each character features a bespoke set of Normal, Special, and Unique attacks, including “big, cinematic Ultimate Skills”.
The primary set of classic Marvel heroes and villains confirmed consists of Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Doctor Doom, Storm, Ms. Marvel, Star-Lord, and Ghost Rider (that is Robbie Reyes’ incarnation, not Johnny Blaze’s … alas). All of the characters are to be reworked via Arc System Works’ particular art and play style.
The most appropriate means to distil the general criteria for the roster was that they should be considered as the “face of Marvel,” with all kinds of battle types and styles equally balanced, and the roster also includes characters that have never appeared as playable before in any fighting game. Great effort has been given so that the appearance and demeanour of every hero and villain are very new and fresh, and quite the opposite of what has ever been seen before. The complementary designs suggest that the characters of MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls may belong to the same universe.
Distinctive Visual Style
The game took a fresh approach to Marvel’s heroes in the form of a Japanimation-style arc. Originally, the team tried for a more Western comic-book style of design, but the Marvel folks wanted to go in a more Arc-like direction. This way of doing things keeps the design fresh while acknowledging that these characters all bear ties to an identity of their own. The Iron Man design is a great example in several ways: it’s graphic and very recognisable, but it’s different from anything seen much in the comics. It seems almost like the opposite of western-looking: almost Kamen Rider and Tiger and Bunny in style, with some mecha-gundam flavour thrown in for good measure.
The design incorporates silver accents alongside the classic red and gold, reminiscent of the Mark XLVI armour from Captain America: Civil War. Iron Man’s arc reactor is smaller, resembling the “v-fins found on many Gundam mobile suits,” and the overall design is notably more mechanical, contrasting with the nanotech applications seen in other Marvel games. Despite differing design philosophies, MARVEL Tōkon successfully captures the essence of Iron Man that fans know and love. The game also features stages filled with easter eggs, including a statue of the Silver Age Avengers designs in the background of one stage, demonstrating that the past is not forgotten.
Conclusion
The game features reimagined stages that are full of cool details and fun secrets for fans to spot. Many stages have multiple areas, and battles can strategically move between them, which are described as amazing and able to change how you fight. Complementing the visuals is a heart-pounding soundtrack and exciting gameplay. The announcement of MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is described as “just the beginning”, with much more information on characters, stages, gameplay modes, and the online experience yet to be shared.
