Union Minister for Home and Cooperatives Amit Shah on Sunday laid the foundation stone for a seed research centre at the campus of Indian Farmers Fertilisers Cooperative Ltd (IFFCO) at Kalol in Gujarat.
The centre will be managed by Bhartiya Beej Sahkari Samiti Ltd (BBSSL), set up under the multi-state cooperative societies Act, 2002. BBSSL is promoted by IFFCO, KRIBHCO (Krishak Bharati Cooperative Ltd), NAFED (National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd), NDDB (National Dairy Development Board) and NCDC (National Centre for Disease Control).
“This seed research centre will develop seeds that increase productivity and also conduct research for seeds that use less water and fertilisers. It will simultaneously preserve and protect traditional seed species,” Shah said while speaking at the event at Kalok which also marked the golden jubilee celebrations of IFFCO’s Kalol unit in Gujarat.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel was also present at the event.
Pointing to the Nano Urea and Nano DAP manufactured by IFFCO, Shah advised farmers to avoid using conventional fertilisers alongside the nano-technology based liquid fertilisers.
“When IFFCO was set up, our focus was on bulk application of fertilisers. Today we are focussing on targeted and controlled release of fertilisers, which ensures delivery of nutrition to crops, while simultaneously ensuring that the land does get spoiled… I want to appeal to the farmers not to use (conventional) fertilisers available in bags, once they have sprayed their farms with liquid Nano Urea and DAP. This is not going to increase productivity, but rather lower it. Your land will become as hard as concrete.”
“Once you have sprayed bottles of liquid fertilisers, there is no need to use additional fertilisers,” Shah said, asking farmers to trust the scientists at IFFCO. “This product has come to the market after they (scientists) carried out all tests and got successful results.” Shah added IFFCO even exports these liquid fertilisers.
