Amazon will take on Starlink later this year, lifts off next week

Summary: Amazon will take on Starlink by launching its own Project Kuiper satellites into orbit. On April 9th, it will send satellites into low earth orbit, and it hopes to provide satellite broadband internet later this year.

Starlink is the talk of the town at the moment as companies race to make satellite communication the norm. It’s a massive innovation and one giant leap for mankind… which makes it a cash cow for big companies to milk.

It was no surprise that other companies would try to provide their own satellite service to the world. E-commerce giant Amazon announced that it’s going to challenge Starlink for dominance over the skies.

Amazon to launch its Project Kuiper satellites next week

Much like Starlink, Amazon’s satellite mission has a space-related name. Named “Project Kuiper”, it seems to be named after the Kuiper belt, a large disk of space debris just beyond Neptune’s orbit. We’re not sure that Amazon’s service will be called Kuiper, but its satellites fall under that name.

On April 9th, the company will launch not 1, not 2, but 27 Kuiper Atlas 1 (KA-01) satellites into orbit. That’s pretty mind-boggling. Since Amazon wants to blanket the world with its signals, the company knows that 27 won’t be enough. That’s why it plans to launch 3,200 satellites into low Earth orbit. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and Amazon won’t launch a fleet of 3,000 satellites in one launch. In fact, the company is planning 80 launches.

We don’t know when Amazon will finish this momentous task, but don’t expect it to be soon. Amazon will gradually spread its service as it launches more satellites. So, it could be years until its dream finally takes flight.

Be that as it may, Amazon wants to start offering its service later this year. Since we’re only four months in, this leaves a span of eight months that the company could launch the service.

Amazon had been working on Project Kuiper for a couple of years. In fact, it sent three test satellites into orbit back in 2023. After testing the waters, it’s ready to take this to the next stage.

This could be a boon for less fortunate regions

Not every place in the world has quick access to a cell tower. This is why satellite communication is key to unlocking connectivity for more places in the world. There are large areas around the world where there’s no connectivity because there are no towers. If you find yourself in a forest or a desert, you’re not likely to get any bars.

This is where satellite communication comes in. Rather than relying on ground-based stations, people can communicate to satellites hovering above Earth. Starlink, which has partnered with T-Mobile, is facilitating this. Amazon wants to provide affordable and accessible internet to people around the world.

As for the speeds, there will be a pretty wide range. When you start using Amazon’s Project Kuiper service, you’ll need to connect to one of three terminals, and each one will have a different speed. The first one will offer up to 100Mbps, the second will offer 400Mbps, and the third will provide up to 1Gbps. That’s rather impressive.
