A Delhi court has framed criminal charges against Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, former Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi and their son Tejashwi Yadav, who is the Opposition leader in the state, in a case of alleged corruption involving the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation. They have been charged with corruption, criminal conspiracy and cheating.
As all three have pleaded not guilty, the case will proceed to trial. This came ahead of the Assembly elections in Bihar, which will take place on November 6 and November 11.
The case pertains to alleged irregularities in a tender awarded to a private company to develop and operate two railway hotels in Ranchi and Puri in 2005, when Lalu Prasad Yadav was the Union railways minister. Read on.
Palestinian militant group Hamas has released all living Israeli hostages as part of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza. The Israel Defense Forces confirmed that there are “no more living Israeli hostages in Hamas captivity”.
The bodies of 28 hostages in Hamas’ custody are yet to be released. In exchange, Israel was on Monday releasing hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.
The ceasefire, mediated by the United States, took effect on Friday. The first segment of the peace plan also includes a phased withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza. Read on.
The Tamil Nadu government has revoked the manufacturing licence and shut down operations of Sresan Pharmaceutical Manufacturer, following the deaths of 22 children linked to its Coldrif cough syrup. Inspections of other drug manufacturers in Tamil Nadu have also been ordered, said the state government.
The firm, located in Kancheepuram, came under scrutiny after children in Madhya Pradesh who consumed the syrup suffered symptoms such as vomiting and difficulty urinating, eventually leading to their deaths.
Samples of Coldrif in Madhya Pradesh were found to have 48.6% of diethylene glycol in it. The permissible limit of diethylene glycol as an impurity is 0.1%. However, drug officials Scroll spoke to said that the chemical is unsafe even in trace amounts. Read on.

The Supreme Court has ordered an inquiry by the Central Board of Investigation into the stampede at actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam rally in Tamil Nadu’s Karur district, which left 41 persons dead. The bench also constituted a three-member supervisory committee, headed by a former Supreme Court judge, to ensure that the investigation is impartial.
The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam had challenged the Madras High Court order that constituted a Special Investigation Team of Tamil Nadu Police officers to probe the stampede. It argued that an independent probe was unlikely if it was carried out by the state police. The party also claimed that there was a possibility of a “pre-planned conspiracy” by “miscreants” behind the stampede. Read on.
Economists Joel Mokyr, Philippe Aghion and Peter Howitt were awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Economics “for having explained innovation-driven economic growth”. One half of the prize was awarded to Mokyr “for having identified the prerequisites for sustained growth through technological progress”, while the other half was awarded jointly to Aghion and Howitt “for the theory of sustained growth through creative destruction”.
