AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami on Wednesday made his first comments on the party’s alliance with BJP for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly polls setting off doubts about the potential partnership between the two parties.
Speaking to media persons outside the State Assembly, Palaniswami stated that if the NDA wins the Assembly elections, there won’t be a coalition government. “You are interpreting Shah’s statements,” he told reporters. “There is no coalition government but the AIADMK-BJP alliance will form the government,” he said (in Tamil), raising questions on whether it will be a scenario of external support from the national BJP.
On Thursday, when asked about the contrary statements between Shah and Palaniswami on the coalition government formation, the newly elected Tamil Nadu BJP President Nainar Nagendran told newspersons that the alliance was announced by the High command, and any decision on coalition government will also be taken only by them.
Just a week has passed by after the BJP-AIADMK announced their alliance for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly polls, but the difference in statements of the two leaders and its interpretations has ignited the question of whether the alliance will survive.
Home Minister, Amit Shah at a press conference on April 11 said that the two parties would face the 2026 Assembly polls under the leadership of Palaniswami, and be part of the government.
To a question on whether the BJP will be part of the government if the NDA wins the elections, Shah then said that they will form the government together. However, he later said that the seat sharing and government formation will later be decided jointly by leaders of both the parties .
