AI and the ethics of art

As Studio Ghibli took over people’s minds (and social media feeds) last week thanks to OpenAI’s new image generation model, there were two sets of people obsessing over it.

While some embraced it, marvelling at how they could now convert all their casual clicks into classic Ghibli art, on the other side are art lovers and artists outraged by OpenAI profiting off the creativity of Japanese animation firm’s vintage art.

What started off as a social media trend, is now making all of us ponder about the long-term impact of such tools. There is no denying that it is a problematic development.

If technology can recreate your family pictures into art forms (which in turn are results of years of craftsmanship) is it “democratisation of art” or profiting off someone’s intellectual property?

AI has always been marketed as a technology that can revolutionise critical fields like science, medicine and others or something to help humans by taking over their monotonous manual tasks but the problem starts when it begins to replace creative work.

One can’t blame the fraternity if they stay well away from adopting such AI tools, which they view as an abomination on their work.

One cannot ignore the ethical concerns. What does this mean for livelihoods of human artists if AI trained on copyrighted, creative works?

Studio Ghibli however is yet to make its views heard publicly about ChatGPT piggybacking on its works.

This could be because Japan as a country has explicitly made it legal for AI models to train on copyrighted works. So should we be so high strung and whine about AI in art?

I am no expert but if a banana plastered on a wall is accepted as modern art, why not ChatGPT generated images?
