Ahmedabad recommended to host 2030 Commonwealth Games

The Executive Board of Commonwealth Sport on Wednesday said it will recommend Ahmedabad as the host city of the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

The final decision will be taken at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly on November 26.

However, the board saying that it will work with Nigeria – the other candidate – “to realise ambition” of hosting the multi-sport event in the future, effectively confirmed Ahmedabad as the winning candidate.

Nigeria’s Abuja was the only city that had submitted a bid alongside Ahmedabad.

The board said the recommendation for Ahmedabad “follows a detailed process” overseen by an evaluation committee, which assessed candidate cities against a wide range of criteria including “technical delivery, athlete experience, infrastructure, governance and alignment with Commonwealth Sport values”.

Ahmedabad will become the second Indian city to host the event after Delhi in 2010.

An alleged scam in the organising of the 2010 event had attracted widespread media coverage, especially after the slow pace of construction and facilities for sportspersons were viewed by some to be unsatisfactory.

The 2030 event will be the centenary of the inaugural edition held in Canada’s Hamilton in 1930.

Glasgow in Scotland will host the games in 2026.

India had finished fourth on the medal table in the 2022 event and third in 2018.
