It looks like Epic can breathe a sigh of relief. After years of Fortnite being absent from the App Store, Apple has given the game the green light and allowed it back. If you’re interested in downloading the game, you can go ahead and grab it from the App Store.
Fortnite’s back in the App Store
Back in April, Epic announced that Fortnite was coming back to the App Store after a protracted legal battle with Apple over its App Store and developer fees. However, despite Epic’s announcement, the app was still MIA. The reason? According to Apple, the company had filed a partial stay on an injunction from the previous case. The company was waiting for the legal proceedings to play out in their entirety before complying.
Epic claimed that it had followed all of Apple’s App Store guidelines. It had submitted the app not once, but twice, but both times Apple failed to approve it. The company did not reject the submission, but it took time to review it. This is even though some app reviews only take a few hours, whereas the Fortnite review process took weeks.
Epic later filed a complaint with the courts, requesting that Apple comply with the court’s ruling. The judge presiding over the case, US District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, pretty much sided with Epic and nudged Apple to complete its review. She hinted that otherwise Apple could need to come back to the courts for “further briefing or a hearing.”
Epic’s history with Apple
For a while, Apple and Epic were very chummy with each other. Epic’s Unreal Engine had been used in many game demos showcasing the capabilities of Apple’s iPhones and its A-series chipsets. However, the relationship soured later on when Epic expressed its unhappiness in the cut Apple takes from in-app purchases.
You see, companies like Apple and Google take a roughly 30% cut from app sales and in-app purchases made through the App Store and Google Play. That’s a lot of money, especially for games like Fortnite, which was making millions during its peak. Epic wasn’t thrilled that it was basically paying for nothing.
Ultimately, this led to a lawsuit between Apple and Epic. While Apple essentially won the case, it was forced to make some changes to the App Store. This includes allowing developers to point users to external payment mechanisms that would allow them to skirt around paying Apple a commission for any sales or in-app purchases.
