Adobe’s Project Indigo Is the Pixel Camera’s Spiritual Successor

In a somewhat surprising move here, former Googlers Marc Levoy and Florian Kainz have launched a new camera app called “Project Indigo” over at Adobe. And it looks to be almost a complete recreation of the Pixel Camera app.

The latter should not be surprising, since both of them worked on the Google Camera and Pixel Camera apps at Google. In fact, Levoy was the face of Pixel’s camera features for quite a few years, until he left Google in 2020 to join Adobe.

This new app is being described as a computational photography camera app that provides incredible image quality, with a more natural look, and full manual controls. Surprisingly, however, the app is only for iOS right now. But there is an Android version in the pipeline.

Adobe says that Indigo is able to offer a more natural look by avoiding strong tone mapping, aggressive smoothing, and over-sharpening. The company claims that it only makes subtle tweaks, versus the major adjustments that a lot of other brands use.

Why is Adobe building a camera app?

Adobe says that this is the beginning of a journey for the company, that is “integrating mobile camera and editing experience that takes advantage of the latest advances in computational photography and AI.” They hope that Indigo will appear to casual mobile photographers who are looking for a natural SLR-like look for their photos. All the way to advanced photographers who want manual control and the highest possible image quality.

As mentioned already, Indigo is going to be iPhone-only for now, and it’ll work on all Pro and Pro Max iPhones from the iPhone 12 Pro, and all non-Pro iPhones from the iPhone 14. This is because it needs at least 6GB of RAM, as you might expect. Indigo does a lot of heavy computing, so extra RAM is needed.
