Navi Mumbai cops visit Raj Thackerays residence serve notice to

A team from the Navi Mumbai Police visited Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray’s residence in Dadar on Wednesday to serve a notice to his son, Amit Thackeray, in connection with a case registered against him, reported the PTI.

Amit Thackeray has been booked for allegedly forcibly unveiling a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Nerul. Officers from the Nerul Police Station arrived at ‘Shivtirth’, the Thackeray residence, on Wednesday afternoon to deliver the notice.

Police said the offences registered against Amit Thackeray and around 70 others carry a punishment of less than seven years. Therefore, they issued a notice under Section 35 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). A Section 35 notice is a formal summons asking a person to appear before the police when an arrest is not immediately necessary.

Amit Thackeray and the other accused are alleged to have forcibly removed the cover from the statue, formed an unlawful assembly, taken out a march without permission, and obstructed police personnel during the incident last week.

Responding to the case, Amit Thackeray said he unveiled the statue because it had been left covered for four months, claiming that “leaders, officers and ministers had no time to inaugurate it, and it was just gathering dust.”

Meanwhile, earlier on Monday, while offering tribute to his late uncle Bal Thackeray along with cousin Uddhav Thackeray, Raj launched a veiled attack on the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and its leaders.

In a reference to Shinde camp leaders’ attempts to claim Bal Thackeray’s legacy, he said in a post on X, “It is laughable that some people try to act like the true heirs of Hindutva by using Balasaheb’s image or asking for votes in the late Shiv Sena chief’s name.”

Bal Thackeray passed away on November 17, 2012, and his memorial was constructed at Shivaji Park, Dadar. Post his demise, the leadership of the party transitioned to his son Uddhav. Later, in 2019, to keep Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from power, Uddhav, along with Congress and NCP, formed the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) and became the chief minister of Maharashtra.
