Palghar woman robbed at knifepoint police launch search for accused


Three men robbed a housewife of her gold jewellery after threatening her with a knife in her third-floor flat of a residential complex in Maharashtra`s Palghar district, police said on Wednesday, reported news agency PTI.

The incident took place at Sativali in the Vasai area on Tuesday, they said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Purnima Chowgule-Sringi said three men rang the doorbell, and when the woman opened the door, they forcibly entered the flat. The accused then robbed her of gold ornaments weighing around four tolas and cash at knife-point, reported PTI.

The middle-aged woman sustained minor injuries while attempting to resist the attackers, said the official from Mira-Bhayandar, Vasai-Virar police. Her child, who was present in the flat, was reportedly unharmed, reported PTI.

“Teams have been formed to trace the robbers. We are currently checking CCTV footage from the vicinity, and will detect the criminals for sure,” she said.

Burglary accused absconding for 31 years held in Latur

In another case, the police in Maharashtra`s Latur city have arrested a 55-year-old man, who was on the run for over 31 years after allegedly committing a burglary, officials have said, reported PTI.

Deepak Nivrutti Kamble is among the three accused who allegedly broke into the house of complainant Dattu Babu Navghan, a resident of Zinnat Society, in February 1994 and stole Rs 11,000 cash, 24 sarees and many household items, reported PTI.

Since the registration of the case, key accused Kamble had vanished, an official said on Tuesday.

Recently, police received information that Kamble, a resident of Vilasnagar, had quietly returned and was staying in the same locality. After verifying the details, they arrested him on Monday, he said, reported PTI.

A local court has remanded Kamble in judicial custody, the official added.

Police crack jewellery theft case in 48 hours, accused held at Nepal border

Meanwhile, police cracked a burglary case within 48 hours after thieves struck a jewellery shop in Palghar district of Maharashtra by arresting five Nepalese nationals from the India-Nepal order and Surat, officials said on Tuesday, reported PTI.

Police also recovered stolen property worth Rs 3.28 crore.

Unidentified persons stole 5.42 kg of gold, 40 kg of silver, and Rs 20 lakh cash from a jeweller`s shop in Palghar on November 9 by breaking the common wall of an adjacent shop, a police officer said, reported PTI.

Police scanned footage of CCTV cameras in the area and identified two as watchmen who worked at a local mall, said Superintendent of Police Yatish Deshmukh, reported PTI.

The suspects had travelled to the UP-Nepal border via Gujarat, and were preparing to cross into the Himalayan nation, he said.

Police teams arrested four suspects with the help of security personnel at the Nepal border on November 11, and the fifth man from Surat.

“This coordinated, cross-state operation, executed within 48 hours, led to the swift arrest of five key accused. We have successfully recovered property worth over Rs 3.28 crore,” said Deshmukh, reported PTI.
