The son of a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh leader in Punjab’s Ferozepur city was on Saturday shot dead allegedly by two unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants, The Indian Express reported.
Naveen Arora, the son of RSS leader Baldev Raj Arora, was shot around 7 pm on Saturday when he was walking home from his shop.
The assailants opened fire at him from point-blank range near the Baba Noor Shah Wali dargah, The Tribune reported.
Naveen was taken to a private hospital, where doctors declared that he had been brought dead.
Closed-circuit television camera footage from shops in the area showed the attackers fleeing the spot moments after firing at Arora, The Indian Express reported.
On Sunday, markets in the area were deserted as shopkeepers sought that the assailants be immediately arrested. Heera Sodhi, a local Bharatiya Janata Party leader, was quoted as saying by the newspaper that markets are usually partially shut on Sundays, but after the killing, shopkeepers had closed them altogether.
The police have not yet stated a motive for the killing.
Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar said that Arora’s death had exposed the failure of the state’s ruling Aam Aadmi Party in maintaining law and order. “Gangsters are effectively running the government, while Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has failed to fulfil his responsibilities and has left Punjab abandoned,” he alleged.
The RSS is the parent organisation of the BJP.
