The Shivaji Nagar Police in Govandi have arrested a doctor and a nurse for their alleged involvement in a racket to sell a newborn boy for Rs 5 lakh. The case came to light after police received information that a 21-year-old unmarried woman, who had delivered a premature baby at a local nursing home, was allegedly planning to sell the infant for money.
Police said the woman had recently given birth at a nursing home owned by Dr Kayamuddin Mukimoddin Khan, who has now been arrested along with staff nurse Anita Popat Sawant. The infant’s mother is currently admitted to the hospital and undergoing treatment. The doctor and nurse were produced in court and remanded to five days of police custody. Police said other individuals allegedly involved in brokering the deal have also been booked.
According to investigators, the woman had developed a relationship with a man and became pregnant. Fearing social stigma and financial difficulties, she allegedly agreed to hand over the newborn in exchange for money. Police said they are verifying the extent of her role while ensuring her physical and emotional well-being.
When a police team visited the nursing home, they found the conditions highly suspicious. It was revealed that Dr. Khan, a BUMS practitioner, was allegedly conducting deliveries and other medical procedures without legal authority or the required licence. Officials said the facility had also conducted multiple illegal abortions in the past.
Police stated that while the doctor and nurse have been arrested, the identities and involvement of other suspects, including intermediaries and the person attempting to buy the baby, are still under investigation. Officers believe more people may be part of an organised network illegally trading infants under the guise of medical care.
Authorities are now examining the nursing home’s records, financial transactions, and possible earlier cases. Police emphasised that their priority is both the safety of the child and establishing the full chain of responsibility.
Further investigation is underway.
