Assam minister’s ‘cauliflower farming’ post during Bihar vote count triggers row

Assam ministers ‘cauliflower farming post during Bihar vote count triggers

Assam minister and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Ashok Singhal on Friday posted on social media a photograph of a cauliflower field with the caption, “Bihar approves gobi farming”, triggering a row.

The post was made while counting was under way in the Bihar Assembly elections, with trends showing the ruling National Democratic Alliance in the lead. The NDA went on to win the election.

The cauliflower image is an apparent reference to the Logain massacre during the 1989 Bhagalpur violence in Bihar, in which more than 100 Muslims were killed and buried in farmland where cauliflower saplings were later planted to conceal the bodies. More than 900 people were killed in the Bhagalpur riots.

Responding to Singhal’s post, Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi said that it was “vulgar and shameful”, adding that it referred to the Logain massacre.

“To invoke such a tragedy in this manner shows how far some are willing to descend in public life,” Gogoi said in a social media post. “This mindset is promoted by his boss Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The chief minister has a hatred for Indian minorities. This is not what Assam is.”

Trinamool Congress MP Saket Gokhale also criticised the post, saying it was made by a BJP minister from Assam and not a “fringe element”. He claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi “approves” of such behaviour.

Several BJP leaders, including Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the BJP Assam Pradesh social media accounts, have triggered rows in recent months over communal remarks and posts.
