Number of Muslim MLAs in new Assembly set to be

Only 10 Muslim MLAs were elected to the Bihar Assembly on Friday, the lowest since 1990, reported The Indian Express.

According to the 2022-’23 state caste survey, the Muslim community makes up 17.7% of Bihar’s 13.07 crore population. The ruling National Democratic Alliance and the Mahagathbandhan had fielded fewer Muslim candidates in the elections held on November 6 and November 11, as compared to 2020.

The ruling National Democratic Alliance swept the polls on Friday, winning 202 of the 243 total seats in the Assembly.

As part of the alliance, the Bharatiya Janata Party won 89 seats, emerging as the largest party in terms of seat share, and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) won 85, almost doubling its tally from the 2020 polls. Their ally Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) won 19.

The Opposition Mahagathbandhan won 35 of the seats. Of these, 25 were won by the Rashtriya Janata Dal. The Congress won six of the 61 seats it contested and the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation clinched two.

The Asaduddin Owaisi-led All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen, not part of either of the blocs, won five of the 25 seats it had contested. The party had won five seats in the 2020 Assembly elections as well. However, four of its legislators subsequently defected to the RJD, which reduced its legislative footprint.

In the 2025 elections, the JD(U) fielded four Muslim candidates, The Indian Express reported. But only Mohd Zama Khan, a minister in the outgoing Cabinet, won from the Chainpur constituency in Kaimur district.

The Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) fielded one Muslim candidate – Mohd Kalimuddin from the Bahadurganj seat in Kishanganj district. The AIMIM’s Md Tauseef Alam won the seat by a margin of over 28,726 votes.

The RJD’s Asif Ahmad won from Bisfi, while its candidate Osama Sahab, son of late gangster-turned-politician Mohd Shahabuddin, won from Raghunathpur.

In the Seemanchal region, the Congress saw its candidates in Kishanganj, Mohd Qamrul Hoda, and Abidur Rehman in Araria, winning.

In 2010, the Muslim representation in the state’s Assembly was at 7.81% with 19 legislators, The Indian Express reported. In 2015, this number went up to 24, with a representation of 9.87%.

In 2020, the minority community’s representation in the Assembly decreased to 19 MLAs. Of them, eight were from the RJD, followed by the AIMIM’s five and the Congress’s four. It also included one each from the Bahujan Samaj Party and CPI(ML) Liberation.

The representation in the outgoing Assembly slipped to 7.81%.
