A 35-year-old doctor of a civic hospital was allegedly abducted by five persons, who posed as policemen, held him captive and robbed him of Rs 2 lakh, in Maharashtra`s Thane district, police said on Saturday, reported news agency PTI.

The Kalwa police on Thursday registered a case under sections 140(2) (kidnapping or abducting to murder or for ransom, etc.), 309(4) (robbery) and other relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for the incident that took place last week, an official said.

According to the police, the accused, including a man known to the doctor, abducted him from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa around 9 am on November 8, reported PTI.

“One of the accused, Irfan Azgar Ali, arrived with four others, who posed as policemen. They forced the doctor into a vehicle, took him to Nashik, where they threatened to implicate him in a fake currency case. The accused took away Rs 2 lakh that the victim had with him, and demanded Rs 12 lakh from him,” the official said, reported PTI.

The doctor managed to escape captivity by evening and returned to his house in Vartak Nagar, after which he submitted a written complaint, he said.

The official said that the police were probing the case and no arrests had been made so far.

12 booked for illegally selling govt land earmarked for cemetery in Bhiwandi

Meanwhile, a case has been registered against 12 persons for allegedly selling and purchasing government land earmarked for a cemetery in Maharashtra`s Thane district 49 years ago, police said on Saturday, reported PTI.

The police on Friday registered a case under section 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code based on a complaint lodged by a revenue official following an investigation into the fraud that took place in April 1976, an official said.

A senior officer from the Shanti Nagar police station said, “The accused allegedly connived to sell and purchase a piece of government land in the Gouripada area of Bhiwandi, despite knowing that it was earmarked for a cemetery. They also carried out registrations in government offices, thereby cheating the government,” reported PTI.

A detailed probe is underway, and no arrests have been made so far, he added.

Navi Mumbai businessman duped of Rs 3.5 lakh in fake cryptocurrency deal

In another case, a 29-year-old businessman from Navi Mumbai was allegedly duped of Rs 3.5 lakh by four persons on the pretext of selling him cryptocurrency, police said on Saturday, reported PTI.

The incident occurred on Wednesday in Turbhe MIDC, where two of the accused, identified as Vishal and Kabir, called the complainant to collect crypto tokens from them, an official said, reported PTI.

“When the complainant reached the location, two unidentified persons dressed in police uniforms arrived in a car, forcibly checked the packet containing Rs 3.5 lakh and snatched it away. All four accused fled the spot,” he said, reported PTI.

A first information report has been registered under sections 318(4) (cheating), 204 (personating a public servant), and other relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and a probe is underway, the official said.
