Congress wins six seats, sharp drop from its 2020 performance

Rahul Gandhi flags donations to ‘anonymous parties 30 killed in

The Congress won six out of the 61 seats it contested in the Assembly elections in Bihar, the Election Commission data showed at 9 pm.

This was one of the worst performances of the party in the state.

During the 2020 Assembly polls, the Congress won 19 seats, whereas in 2010, it managed to clinch only four seats in the state.

In the 2025 elections, the Congress’ Mohammad Qamrul Hoda won the Kishanganj seat with a margin of more than 12,000 votes. In Manihari, Manohar Prasad Singh won by over 15,000 votes while Abidur Rahman had a margin of over 12,000 votes in Araria.

The margins were far slimmer in Valmiki Nagar, where Surendra Prasad won by 1,675 votes. In Chanpatia, Abhishek Ranjan won by just 602 votes and Manoj Bishwas won by only 221 votes in Forbesganj.

The Congress is part of the Mahagathbandhan, which also comprises the Rashtriya Janata Dal, the Vikassheel Insaan Party and three Left parties – the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation, the Communist Party of India and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) – along with the newly formed Indian Inclusive Party.

Among the Congress’ allies, the Rashtriya Janata Dal was leading in or won 25 seats, while the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation had won two seats and the Communist Party of India won a single seat.

A party or an alliance needs 122 seats in the 243-member Assembly to form the government.

The alliance had seen uncertainty over seat-sharing arrangements ahead of the polls. The Congress fielded 61 candidates, the RJD had 143, while the three Left parties together announced 20 candidates.

The first phase of polling took place on November 6 and the second on November 11. The provisional voter turnout was a record 67.1%. This was the highest polling percentage in Bihar since 1951, the Election Commission said.

Several exit polls had predicted a win for the ruling NDA.

Congress leader Ashok Gehlot, who was the senior observer for the party in Bihar, said the results were “disappointing” but added that it validated party colleague Rahul Gandhi’s allegations of voter fraud in the country, ANI reported.

“This means that what Rahul Gandhi said for Vote Chori, this is what Vote Chori is,” Gehlot told the news agency. “If fair elections are not held, if rigging takes place, if booth capturing takes place or there is cheating and money is being distributed – EC didn’t take any action, they were colluding with the ruling party.”

Gandhi and the Congress have repeatedly alleged that large-scale rigging took place in the Maharashtra and Haryana Assembly polls. The Election Commission has rejected the allegations.

The main contest in Bihar was between the NDA and the Opposition Mahagathbandhan alliance.

The NDA comprises Chief Minister Nitish Kumar-led JD(U), the BJP, Union minister Chirag Paswan’s faction of the Lok Janshakti Party, Rajya Sabha MP Upendra Kushwaha’s Rashtriya Lok Morcha and Union minister Jitan Ram Manjhi’s Hindustani Awam Morcha.

The ruling NDA is leading in 205 seats, with the BJP ahead in 95, the JD(U) in 84, the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) in 20, the Hindustani Awam Morcha in five and the Rashtriya Lok Morcha in four.

In the 2020 Assembly polls, the NDA and the Mahagathbandhan ended up with an identical vote share at 37.2%. However, the NDA returned to power in Bihar with a slender majority, winning 125 seats in the Assembly. The Opposition bagged 110 seats.

The RJD had emerged as the single-largest party with 75 seats but still lost the election.
