Standing Her Ground with Dignity
In her note, Gouri wrote, “As a public figure, I understand that scrutiny is part of my profession. However, comments or questions – direct or indirect – that target a person’s body or appearance are inappropriate in any context. I wish I had been asked questions about the film, the work I was there for. I cannot help but wonder if they would ask a male actor the same, in the same aggressive tone.”
Her words struck a chord with many who praised her for addressing an issue that often goes unspoken. While Gouri’s composure earned admiration, her message went deeper, calling for a shift in how the media treats artists, especially women, during promotional events.
The actor further said that standing up for herself was not easy but necessary, not only for her own self respect but also for others who have experienced similar treatment. “This is not new but still prevalent, normalising body shaming in jest while perpetuating unrealistic beauty standards. I hope this will be a reminder to anyone who has felt this way that we are allowed to speak up. We are allowed to express our discomfort, question when wronged and work towards stopping this cycle.”
Her statement, which was widely shared across social media platforms, has since become a touchstone for conversations about gender sensitivity, media ethics and body image in the Indian film industry.
Industry, Media and Public Rally Behind Gouri
Following the viral clip, several prominent voices came forward to support Gouri’s stand. Celebrities including Chinmayi Sripaada, Khushbu Sundar, Kavin, Pa Ranjith, Jwala Gutta and composer Santosh Narayanan took to social media to applaud her for maintaining dignity in the face of repeated provocation. Many pointed out that such questions have no place in a professional setting meant to discuss one’s work.
The Chennai Press Club issued an official note condemning the reporter’s behaviour, calling the question “highly unethical, indecent and condemnable.” The statement also praised Gouri for her “assertive and courageous” response despite being put in an uncomfortable position.
Their message read in part, “Raising questions aimed at mocking or humiliating a woman artist over her physical appearance, especially in a professional forum meant to discuss a film, is highly unethical, indecent and condemnable. The Chennai Press Club appreciates actress Gouri Kishan for assertively and courageously expressing her views even in the face of collective opposition during the press meet.”
The Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) also expressed solidarity with her, stating, “AMMA understands your pain, Gouri. And we strongly believe that it is wrong to engage in body shaming irrespective of who does it, when and where.”
Despite the heated online debate, Gouri’s closing words in her note stood out for their grace and restraint. She urged her followers not to attack the individual involved, writing that her intention was not to provoke hate but to encourage empathy and accountability. “This is not an invitation to target or harass the individual involved,” she clarified, requesting that everyone approach the issue with “greater empathy, sensitivity and respect on all sides.”
As support continues to pour in, Gouri has expressed her gratitude, calling the response “unexpected, overwhelming and humbling.”
Her latest film Others, directed by Abin Hariharan, released on November 7. The drama features debutant Aditya Madhavan alongside Anju Kurian, Munishkanth, Harish Perady, Mala Parvathy, Jagan and R. Sundarrajan. Gouri plays a doctor while Aditya portrays a police officer.
In the aftermath of the controversy, Others has drawn even more attention, not just for its performances but also for Gouri’s authenticity off screen. Her refusal to stay silent has reminded audiences and the media alike that respect and professionalism are non-negotiable and that confidence, not compliance, defines a true artist.
