Mumbai cab driver booked for creating fake Instagram defaming passenger

A ride-sharing driver in Mumbai has been booked for allegedly creating a fake Instagram account of a woman and labelling her a “call girl” after she refused to pay toll charges during a trip, police said on Thursday.

According to the news agency PTI, the accused, Vinay Kumar Yadav, a resident of Jharkhand, reportedly also shared the woman’s personal details online.

Authorities did not clarify how he accessed her information.

The 31-year-old woman, a government employee, had booked a ride from South Mumbai to Dadar. During the trip, Yadav allegedly demanded she pay toll charges, which she refused, sparking an argument.

Following the dispute, Yadav allegedly began calling and verbally abusing her repeatedly. After she blocked him, she started receiving unsolicited calls from unknown numbers. On checking, the woman discovered a fake Instagram account created using her photograph and personal details, labelling her a “call girl.”

As per PTI, she lodged a complaint with the social media platform and learned that the driver had created the account. She then approached the Dadar police.

A case was registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections for acts intended to insult a woman’s modesty and for defamation, as well as under the IT Act, according to the FIR. Yadav was traced to his native place in Jharkhand via his mobile number and served a notice to appear before the police.

Mumbai: Actress alleges assault by brash auto driver in Mira Road

A 32-year-old actress, Shamim Akbar Alli from Mira Road, has filed a complaint at Kashimira police station, alleging that an autorickshaw driver assaulted her near her daughter’s school. The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon when the driver allegedly twisted her hand in front of her five-year-old child.

Police said Shamim, a resident of Mira Road East, had taken an autorickshaw after finishing her workout at a gym in Kanakia. Around 2.45 pm, she asked the driver to stop near her daughter’s school, but he allegedly grew angry and began shouting.

Speaking to mid-day, Shamim said, “I was returning home from the gym and stopped the auto outside my daughter’s school. The driver got frustrated and started abusing me, asking why I had stopped the rickshaw there. He demanded I pay the fare immediately because he was in a hurry. I quickly picked up my daughter and got back into the same rickshaw, asking him to drop us home.”

According to Shamim, the situation escalated once they reached her society gate. “My daughter asked for a short ride towards the Fountain area, and I told her we’d go in another auto. Suddenly, the driver became aggressive. He turned around, grabbed my right hand, and twisted it while I was still inside the rickshaw with my daughter,” she added.

Following the incident, Shamim approached the Kashimira police station and registered a complaint. Police have recorded her statement and noted the registration number of the rickshaw. A police officer from Kashimira police station said, “An inquiry has been initiated, and efforts are underway to trace the accused driver.”
