K-pop lovers have a reason to celebrate. Netflix has confirmed that KPop Demon Hunters 2 is officially on the way. Partnering once again with Sony Pictures Animation, the streamer announced that the follow up to the record-breaking animated film will arrive in 2029.

The first movie became a breakout success. It captivated global audiences with its mix of pop energy, supernatural adventure and larger-than-life animation. Now, the creative team is preparing to bring back the beloved all-girl demon-fighting band for another round of music-fueled mayhem.
According to Bloomberg, Netflix and Sony have finalised their partnership for the project. The long wait between installments isn’t surprising. Large-scale animated productions typically take years to complete. Though KPop Demon Hunters 2 is still in early development, fans are already buzzing about the return of Huntr/x, the powerful K-pop girl group that battles demons through the force of their music.
Details about the plot and cast remain under wraps, but given the massive popularity of the first film, expectations are sky-high for one of the decade’s most anticipated animated releases.
The original KPop Demon Hunters was a streaming hit and became a cultural juggernaut. It quickly became the OTT platforms most-watched animated movie ever, thanks to its mix of emotion, spectacle and infectious pop soundtracks. The film’s standout tracks, including Golden, Your Idol, and Soda Pop. All found chart success, even cracking the Billboard Hot 100 and went viral among fans worldwide.
The movie’s momentum pushed the OTT platform to also bring it to the big screen. A special sing-along theatrical release rolled out in August and again in October. They earned roughly 18 million dollars during its initial run and another 5 to 6 million dollars during Halloween. These are impressive numbers for a film that is already available for streaming.
Now, fans cannot keep calm about the sequel. Co-director Maggie Kang, who helmed the first film with Chris Appelhans, has long hinted at wanting to expand the universe. “We planted so many seeds for backstories we never got to explore,” she shared with Variety earlier this year.
While story details haven’t been revealed, the sequel is expected to explore the origins of Huntr/x and the mystical world they protect. Fans are hoping the next film will deliver more of what made the first so memorable – catchy music, heartfelt storytelling and kinetic action.
