Baby anacondas, lizards and iguanas seized at Mumbai airport; Thane woman booked

Baby anacondas lizards and iguanas seized at Mumbai airport Thane

Customs officers on Thursday intercepted a Thane-based woman at Mumbai’s international airport who allegedly trafficked 154 exotic wildlife species in her luggage.

The seized animals included several rare and endangered species such as baby anacondas, iguanas, tortoises, turtles, lizards, bearded dragons, and raccoons. They were reportedly packed inside plastic containers within the luggage.

Wildlife rescue experts from RAWW (Resqink Association for Wildlife Welfare) were called in to provide medical support to the animals and stabilise them.

The animals are listed in CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) and Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, and will be deported back to the country of origin as per the provisions of the law issued by the WCCB (Wildlife Crime Control Bureau).

The woman has been booked under the Customs Act, 1962, and the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
