Heavy rainfall continues, yellow alert in 12 districts

Heavy rainfall continues yellow alert in 12 districts

Several districts of Kerala continued to record heavy rainfall on Monday, leading to waterlogging and traffic congestions, PTI reported.

While the India Meteorological Department had issued an orange alert for four districts – Ernakulam, Idukki, Malappuram and Kozhikode – for heavy to very heavy rain on Monday, the warning was revised to yellow for heavy rainfall in 12 districts on Tuesday morning, Mathrubhumi reported.

All districts except Kasaragod and Kannur were issued the warning.

While an orange alert requires the authorities to “be prepared” in view of an extreme weather event, a yellow alert means that the administration should “be updated” on the situation.

On Monday, the high ranges of southern Thiruvananthapuram, northern Kozhikode and Kannur districts witnessed widespread rain and overcast climate during the day, the news agency reported.

The rainfall had led to waterlogging on the Thiruvananthapuram-Thenkasi road.

In Kannur, water entered the premises of several houses and commercial establishments. Houses were also damaged because of lightning strikes in Thrissur district’s Mala and Elanji in Ernakulam, PTI reported.

The State Disaster Management Authority urged residents living in areas prone to landslides, mudslides and flash floods to move to safer locations as per the directions issued by the authorities.

In a statement, it added that residents living along riverbanks and in areas downstream of dams should also relocate in advance, after official instructions, in view of possible danger, the news agency reported.

On Sunday, at least one person was killed in Idukki district amid heavy flooding and landslides triggered by heavy rainfall. The weather department also said that the rain will continue in the state till Wednesday because of a low-pressure area formed over the Arabian Sea.

On October 16, the weather agency had said that the southwest monsoon had withdrawn from the entire country. It added the northeast monsoon had set in over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, south interior Karnataka and Kerala-Mahé.
