Afghanistan and Pakistan have agreed to immediate ceasefire says Qatar

Afghanistan and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire after negotiations held in Doha, Qatar’s foreign ministry announced early on Sunday.

The development came a week after border clashes that killed dozens of troops and civilians on both sides.

Doha on Sunday said that Pakistan and Afghanistan agreed to a ceasefire after talks mediated by Qatar and Turkiye. The two South Asian countries also agreed to hold follow-up meetings to ensure that the truce remains sustainable, Qatar’s foreign ministry said.

Qatar said it hoped that the ceasefire would to end border tensions “between the two brotherly countries” and form the foundation for sustainable peace in the region.

The violence between the two neighbours had flared since explosions in Afghanistan on October 9, which Kabul blamed on Islamabad. Pakistan has not claimed responsibility for the explosions.

Two days after the blasts, Taliban and Pakistani forces exchanged fire at several places along the border between the two countries. The Taliban claimed that the group killed 58 Pakistani soldiers in the clashes. Islamabad did not comment on the claim about the deaths.

Afghanistan and Pakistan had agreed to a temporary ceasefire on October 15. The agreement had brought a brief halt to the deadliest fighting between the neighbours since 2021, when the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan after the withdrawal of the United States forces.

However, two days later, the Taliban regime in Afghanistan said Pakistan launched airstrikes in its territory, killing 10 persons.

Pakistan has repeatedly accused Afghanistan of harbouring militant groups led by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, or the Pakistani Taliban, on its soil. However, Kabul denies this claim.
