
The middle weeks of October leading up to Diwali are packed with new films and shows. These include Thamma, Bison Kaalamaadan, Premachi Goshta 2 and Culpa Neustra.
Among the movies that are arriving on streaming platforms after their theatrical run are Punit Rangaswamy’s Kannada thriller Elumale (October 17, ZEE5).

Culpa Nuestra
October 16, Spanish, on Prime Video
The concluding title in the Culpables trilogy, based on the best-selling novels by Mercedes Ron, is here. Culpa Nuestra (Our Fault) follows Culpa Mia (My Fault, 2023) and Culpa Tuya (Your Fault, 2024).
Nicole Wallace and Gabriel Guevara play Noah and Nick, who reunite at a wedding. According to the official synopsis, “Nick’s inability to forgive Noah creates an seemingly insurmountable barrier between them. He, now heir to his grandfather’s business empire, and she, just starting her career, resist reigniting a flame that still smoulders within them.”
Bison Kaalamaadan

Acclaimed Tamil director Mari Selvaraj’s new movie revolves around a high-stakes kabbadi competition. Dhruv Vikram, Anupama Parameswaran, Pasupathy and Lal star, among others. Selvaraj’s previous film was Vaazhai in 2024.

Vignesh Shivan’s Love Insurance Kompany, starring the popular Tamil actor Pradeep Ranganathan, was supposed to have been out on October 17. That film has been postponed to December 18 to make way for another Ranganathan starrer.
Dude, directed and written by Keerthiswaran, also stars Sai Abhyankkar and Mamitha Baiju. In the film, Ranganathan’s character breaks up with his girlfriend but is comforted by his good friend (Baiju).
Santosh
October 17, Hindi, Lionsgate Play
Premiered at Cannes in 2024 and set for a release in Indian cinemas but held up by censorship – Sandhya Suri’s Santosh has had quite the journey. Suri’s feature debut, which follows acclaimed documentaries, will finally be premiered in India on the Lionsgate Play steaming platform.
Shahana Goswami plays the titular police constable who becomes part of a team investigating a Dalit girl’s murder. The investigation makes Santosh confront her own prejudices, while also acknowledging the fault lines in Indian society. Sunita Rajawar plays a senior officer who offers Santosh crucial lessons in dealing with casual sexism and the balance of power in the police.
Bhagwat Chapter One: Raakshas
October 17, Hindi, on ZEE5
Police officer Vishwas Bhagwat (Arshad Warsi) leads an investigation into a series of disappearances that might just be murders. Nineteen women are missing. Samir (Jitendra Kumar) is picked up for the crimes, but is he innocent? Akshay Shere’s film, written by Bhavini Bheda, also stars Ayesha Kaduskar.
A Nice Boy

Canadian director’s Roshan Sethi’s gay romance A Nice Indian Boy has been retitled A Nice Boy for the Indian market. The film stars Manhunter star Jonathan Groff, Karan Soni, Sunita Mani, Zarina Garg and Harish Patel.
Soni plays Naveen, a doctor, who brings his fiance, Jay, a white man adopted by Indian parents, to meet his family. Eric Randall’s screenplay is adapted from the play of the same name by Madhuri Shekar.
The Ugly Stepsister

Emilie Blichfeldt’s acclaimed directorial debut is loosely on the fairy tale Cinderella. The film is set sometime in the distant past. Elvira finds herself in a direct contest with her step-sister Agnes, who is everything she isn’t – conventionally attractive, poised, and a frontrunner for the affections of the prince Julian.
The body horror satire stars Lea Myren as Elvira, Thea Sofie Loch Naess as Agnes and Ane Dahl Torp as Elvira’s mother Rebekka.
The Godfather: Part II

The PVR Inox Cinemas chain has been re-releasing restored classics for some months now. This week, The Godfather II will be back on the screens for a limited period.
The second film in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather trilogy advances Michael Corleone’s story arc, his relationship with his brother Freddie, and his involvement with gangsters in pre-Revolution Cuba. Also part of the sprawling plot is the back story of Michael’e father, Vito Corleone. The star-studded cast includes Al Pacino, John Cazale, Diane Keaton, Robert De Niro, Robert Duvall, Talia Shire and Lee Strasberg.

Rebecca Miller interviews legendary American director Martin Scorsese about his life, craft and passion for cinema. According to a press release, the five-part documentary includes “exclusive, unrestricted access to Scorsese’s private archives”.
Apart from conversing with the 82-year-old director, Miller also speaks to family members, actors and collaborators, among them Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jodie Foster, Daniel Day-Lewis, Sharon Stone, Paul Schrader, Thelma Schoonmaker, Steven Spielberg, Margot Robbie and Cate Blanchett.

Under orders from the Director of Korean intelligence Park Sang-hyeon (Ryoo Seung-bum), Go-myung has to double hijack the plane from the ground.”

Aditya Sarpotdar’s Thamma is part of producer Maddock Films’ horror comedy universe, comprising Stree, Stree 2, Bhediya and Munjya. Thamma stars Ayushmann Khurrana, Rashmika Mandanna, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Paresh Rawal in key roles.
Alok (Khurrana) becomes a vampire after an encounter with the evil Yakshasan (Nawazuddin Siddiqui). Tadaka (Rashmika Mandanna) turns up to help Alok – and they fall in love. The cast includes Sathyaraj, Faisal Malik and Geeta Aggarwal, with a reported cameo by Varun Dhawan as the werewolf Bhediya.

Satish Rajwade’s spiritual sequel to his 2013 hit Premashi Goshta stars Marathi cinema heart-throb Lalit Prabhakar, Rucha Vaidya and Ridhima Pandit. The film, a remake of the Gujarati film Hurry Om Hurry, is about two possible outcomes of a relationship. Also starring Swwapnil Joshi and Bhau Kadam as sparring lawyers.

Lazarus

Lazarus is based on an original idea by the indefatigable twist-meister Harlan Coben. The six-episode series is about Joel Lazarus (Sam Claflin), whose father Jonathan (Bill Nighy) dies by apparent suicide. Joel is plagued by disturbing experiences even as he investigates his father’s demise as well as his sister’s murder 25 years ago.
