The Supreme Court asked the Enforcement Directorate whether it was encroaching upon the rights of the Tamil Nadu Police in a money laundering investigation against the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation. A bench headed by Chief Justice BR Gavai asked the ED whether the state police could not look into the matter.
The ED has alleged that the state government-owned corporation, also known as Tasmac, which has a monopoly over the sale of alcoholic beverages in Tamil Nadu, is at the centre of a Rs 1,000-crore corruption network involving officials, liquor distilleries and bottling companies. The probe is based on cases filed by the state against Tasmac officials since 2017.

The Haryana government sent Director General of Police Shatrujeet Kapur on leave amid a row surrounding the death of Indian Police Service officer Y Puran Kumar. Kumar was found dead at his home in Chandigarh on October 7.
The police said he died by suicide. In a “final note” recovered from the scene, Kumar named 11 serving and retired officers, including Kapur and Rohtak Superintendent of Police Narendra Bijarniya, accusing them of caste-based discrimination.
Kumar’s post-mortem examination has not yet been conducted as his family has refused to allow it until Kapur and Bijarniya are arrested. On Saturday, Birjaniya was replaced as the Rohtak superintendent of police. Read on.
The World Health Organization has issued a medical alert against the use of three cough syrups made in India that were found to have the diethylene glycol chemical more than the permissible limit, which can cause acute kidney and liver failure. The alert warned against specific batches of the Coldrif Cough Syrup manufactured by Sresan Pharmaceutical in Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat-based Rednex Pharmaceuticals’ Respifresh TR and ReLife from Shape Pharma.
The action came after the deaths of 22 children in the past month linked to the consumption of contaminated cough syrups. Read on.
The Bombay High Court granted bail to three prime accused in the murder of Communist Party of India leader Govind Pansare. Those whose bail was approved are Virendra Tawade, Sharad Kalaskar and Amol Kale.
Pansare, a rationalist, was shot by two unidentified gunmen on his way home from a morning walk in Kolhapur on February 16, 2015. He died four days later.
Six others were granted bail in the case in January citing their prolonged incarceration.
Kalaskar was among the persons convicted by a Pune court in May 2024 in the killing of anti-superstition activist Narendra Dabholkar. Tawade was among those who were acquitted in the matter. Read on.
