The Supreme Court of India has announced a significant expansion of its free Wi‑Fi facility, making it available across the entire main building of the Court. Previously, the complimentary internet service was limited to specific courtrooms and nearby corridors, but under the latest initiative, lawyers, litigants, court staff, and visitors can now access Wi‑Fi in all areas of the main premises.

Chief Justice BR Gavai highlighted that this step is part of the Supreme Court’s ongoing efforts to modernize judicial infrastructure and enhance digital accessibility within the institution.

The introduction of free Wi‑Fi in the Supreme Court dates back to July 2023, when the facility was first provided in select courtrooms and adjoining spaces. The move was aimed at facilitating the efficient use of digital resources, including accessing case files, online research tools, and other electronic resources essential for legal proceedings.

The Court recognized that in an era where digital connectivity plays a crucial role in the functioning of legal institutions, providing seamless internet access is vital for the smooth conduct of judicial work.

With the expansion of the Wi‑Fi network to cover the entire main building, the Court intends to reduce dependence on paper-based documentation, thereby promoting environmental sustainability while streamlining legal processes. Lawyers and litigants can now submit and access electronic records, review case information online, and communicate digitally without restrictions related to location within the building.

Chief Justice Gavai emphasized that the initiative reflects the Court’s commitment to embracing technology to enhance efficiency and accessibility. The expanded facility is expected to benefit not only legal professionals but also members of the public who visit the Court, making it easier for them to access digital information and services. This step aligns with broader national efforts to digitize judicial processes, improve transparency, and make legal proceedings more user-friendly.

By extending free Wi‑Fi to all areas of the main building, the Supreme Court has set an example of integrating modern technology into judicial infrastructure, ensuring that connectivity, efficiency, and access to information go hand in hand in the administration of justice.
