Maharashtra: Man booked for objectionable AI video on CJI Gavai

Maharashtra Man booked for objectionable AI video on CJI Gavai

The Police in Maharashtra have registered a case against a man from Navi Mumbai for allegedly uploading on social media an AI-generated video containing objectionable references to Chief Justice of India (CJI) Bhushan Gavai, officials said on Thursday, reported the PTI.

The accused, a resident of Panvel in Navi Mumbai, used Artificial Intelligence tools to fabricate a video containing derogatory references to CJI Gavai, they said.

A person from Panvel saw the video shared across multiple social media platforms on Tuesday and filed a complaint, an official from Panvel Taluka police station said.

Based on the complaint, an FIR was registered against the accused on Wednesday under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities Act), and efforts were on to trace him, the official said, according to the PTI.

Cyber experts have also been roped in to trace the original source and production process of the video, he said.

“We are verifying the IP addresses and digital footprints involved in the circulation of the video,” the official said.

The police have also issued directives to various social media platforms to remove the objectionable content immediately, he said.

Earlier, on Monday, a lawyer attempted to hurl a shoe towards Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai in his courtroom in the Supreme Court in New Delhi.

The Bar Council of India (BCI) on Monday suspended the practice of Advocate Rakesh Kishore, the 71-year-old lawyer who allegedly attempted to hurl a shoe at CJI Gavai during court proceedings on Monday, news agency PTI reported.

The council had also initiated disciplinary proceedings against him.

In a shocking breach of decorum, Kishore reportedly approached the dais during a hearing and tried to throw a shoe at the CJI, but was promptly stopped by security personnel.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association (SCAORA) has strongly condemned the incident in a unanimous resolution, PTI reported.

Headed by Vipin Nair, the association described Kishore’s act as a “disrespectful and intemperate gesture” by an advocate.

In a statement, SCAORA secretary Nikhil Jain urged the Supreme Court to “take suo motu cognizance of the said conduct and initiate appropriate proceedings for contempt of court, as the act/gesture is a calculated move to scandalise the authority of the Hon`ble Supreme Court and lower its dignity in the eyes of the public.”

The association emphasised that freedom of speech carries a duty of restraint, particularly for members of the legal profession, who are officers of the court, PTI reported. It expressed “deep anguish and disapproval at the recent act of an advocate who, by his unwarranted and intemperate gesture, sought to disrespect the office and authority of the Hon`ble Chief Justice of India and his companion Judges.”

Such conduct, the bar body said, is unbecoming of a member of the Bar and undermines the mutual respect between the “Bench and the Bar.” It added that this behaviour is antithetical to the dignity of the legal profession and contrary to constitutional values of decorum, discipline, and institutional integrity.

“Any attempt to malign or a personalised act/gesture aimed against a sitting judge of the Hon`ble Supreme Court constitutes a direct assault on the independence of the judiciary and undermines public faith in the justice delivery system,” SCAORA said.

The association condemned the incident as a “cowardly and disrespectful act” and said it stands in complete solidarity with the CJI and the entire judiciary in upholding the majesty, independence, and impartiality of the Supreme Court.
