Assembly elections in Bihar will be held in two phases on November 6 and November 11, the Election Commission has announced. The counting of votes will take place on November 14.
Bihar has 243 constituencies, including 38 for Scheduled Castes and two for Scheduled Tribes. The Assembly elections are being held after the special intensive revision of the state’s electoral roll. At least 47 lakh voters in the state have been excluded from the final roll published by the poll panel on September 20.
Announcing the date for the polls, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said that the special intensive revision exercise “purified” the voters’ list after 22 years. Read more.

The Supreme Court has asked the Union government to consider sharing the grounds for arresting Sonam Wanchuk with his wife, Gitanjali Angmo. The court has issued a notice to the Centre and listed the matter next for October 14.
Wangchuk was arrested in Leh on September 26 under the National Security Act, two days after four persons were killed in police firing during protests seeking constitutional safeguards for Ladakh. The Union government has claimed that the violence was incited by Wangchuk’s “provocative statement”.
During the hearing, the Centre agreed to look into the feasibility of sharing the grounds for Wangchuk’s arrest with Angmo. It also alleged that Angmo was trying to create a “hype” and an “emotive atmosphere” to portray to the media that Wangchuk was being denied medical care. Read more.

A lawyer, identified as advocate Rakesh Kishore, tried to throw an object at Chief Justice BR Gavai inside the Supreme Court on Monday. He also shouted: “Sanatan Dharam ka apmaan nahi sahega Hindustan.” India will not tolerate disrespect towards Sanatan Dharma.
Kishore seemed to be responding to a statement made by the chief justice on September 16 while hearing a plea seeking the restoration of a beheaded idol of Hindu deity Vishnu at Madhya Pradesh’s Khajuraho, when he said the petitioner should “go and ask the deity himself to do something”. Read more.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has alleged that its Maldah Uttar MP Khagen Murmu and Siliguri MLA Shankar Ghosh were chased and assaulted in Jalpaiguri while reviewing flood damage in the region. Murmu sustained serious injuries as his vehicle was ransacked by a mob of around 500 persons.
The attackers reportedly shouted “Go away BJP” and threw stones, sticks and shoes at the car, shattering its windows. The BJP accused the ruling Trinamool Congress of orchestrating the assault. Read more.
The Supreme Court has refused to hear former Tamil Nadu minister V Senthil Balaji’s plea against its order from April that forced him to resign from the state’s Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government. Balaji’s plea sought clarification about whether the April order prevented him from becoming a minister during the course of the trial in the money laundering case.
Balaji was granted bail in a money laundering case on September 26, 2024, and was reinstated as a minister in the state Cabinet three days later. On April 23, the court warned Balaji that his bail would be cancelled if he did not resign from his post, following which he stepped down for a second time on April 27. Read more.
