Several members of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh were on Thursday detained and later released by the police in Chennai after they entered the premises of a government school to conduct a drill, PTI reported.
About 40 members of the RSS had held a drill at the school in the Iyyappanthangal area, the Avadi Police Commissionerate said.
A case of trespassing has been registered against the RSS workers based on a complaint from the school authorities, the news agency quoted an unidentified police official as saying.
The police alleged that the drill was held without prior permission, ANI reported.
The BJP criticized the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led state government for the detention and questioned whether there was “no place in the Dravidian model of governance for a peaceful rally”. The RSS is the parent organisation of the BJP.
The BJP’s Tamil Nadu president Nainar Nagenthran claimed that RSS workers had been conducting similar drills at the same location for many years without causing any disturbance to the public.
“The DMK government must realize that nationalists who have dedicated themselves to selfless service for the nation’s welfare for a century cannot be silenced through cases and arrests,” he said.
BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan called the detentions “undemocratic”, and accused Tamil Nadu’s DMK government of having an “anti-national mindset”.
