
Motor pumps and cables valued at Rs 27 lakh have allegedly been stolen from a company`s warehouse in Maharashtra`s Palghar district, prompting police to register a case against a security guard, officials said on Wednesday, reported news agency PTI.
The theft took place between the evening of September 25 and the morning of September 26 at the warehouse of a private plastics company at Savroli in the Talasari area, they said.
The stolen goods, used for the production of PVC pipes and fittings, included motor pumps valued at Rs 15 lakh and various cables of Rs 12 lakh, Talasari police station`s sub-inspector Amol Laxman Chindhe said, reported PTI.
An initial investigation suggested that the day-duty guard intentionally left the warehouse unguarded, the official said.
Based on a complaint by the company`s manager, a case was registered against the security guard under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections for theft and house breaking, the police added, reported PTI.
Two held for theft at house in Thane; stolen items of Rs 8 lakh seized
In another case, the police have arrested two persons in connection with the theft at a house in Maharashtra`s Thane district and seized valuables of Rs 8 lakh from them, an official said on Wednesday, reported PTI.
The theft took place at the house in Shil-Daigarh area on September 24.
After a probe and analysis of CCTV footage of 50 to 60 places in the area, the police arrested a 21-year-old tempo driver and another person, aged 35, from Vikhroli in neighbouring Mumbai on Tuesday, senior police inspector Vijaykumar Deshmukh said, reported PTI.
The police seized stolen items, including clothes and two mobile phones, as well as a stolen tempo and tools used in the crime, collectively valued at Rs 8 lakh, from the accused, both hailing from Uttar Pradesh, he said, reported PTI.
Meanwhile, Mumbai registered 65,441 cases in 2023 and remained in the fourth place in terms of registration of criminal cases among the metropolitan cities, according to the National Crime Records Bureau report.
Delhi topped the list with 3,43,483 cases, whereas Bengaluru was ranked second with 68,520 cases and Kochi with 67,616 cases, the report said.
In 2022, Mumbai witnessed 89,098 criminal cases. India`s financial capital was also in the fourth spot in 2023 when it came to murder cases. The metropolis registered 124 cases in which 125 persons were killed.
