A 26-year-old labourer was killed and another man injured in a violent clash between tenants in Mankhurd on Monday night, allegedly over an electricity connection dispute.
Police have registered FIR against 10 people for murder and attempted murder. Of them, nine have been arrested, while one is currently absconding.
The deceased has been identified as Raju Sheikh, a native of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, who had arrived in Mumbai just 15 days ago in search of work. His injured friend, identified as Idu, is undergoing treatment.
According to the police, the incident took place around 8.30 pm on Monday within the Mankhurd police station limits.
Raju and his friends lived on the first floor of a house, while the main accused and his family resided on the ground floor. An argument broke out when Raju and his group requested the ground-floor family to allow them to connect a wire to their electrical box, as their floor had no power supply.
Police said the main accused had earlier seen Raju speaking to his wife about the power issue. Shortly after, he and his associates allegedly attacked Raju. The labourer sustained severe injuries in the assault and was rushed to the hospital, where he was declared dead, police said.
“The dispute escalated into a physical altercation in which Raju was killed and Idu was injured. Ten people have been booked for murder and attempted murder. Nine have been arrested, while one is absconding,” a senior police official said.
