The Kerala Assembly unanimously passed a resolution against the Election Commission’s decision to conduct a special intensive revision of the electoral rolls. The resolution said that the “hasty” move could harm the rights of citizens.
The ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Left Democratic Front and the Opposition Congress-led United Democratic Front said in the resolution that it was “ill-intentioned” to conduct the exercise ahead of the local body elections later this year and the Assembly polls in 2026.
The resolution came while such an exercise is underway in Bihar. It also came amid reports that a nationwide revision of the electoral rolls is expected to begin by October. Read on.
The Nepali government imposed a travel ban on ousted Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and four former officials as part of an investigation into the deaths of 72 participants in the violent protests that took place earlier this month. The ban was recommended by a commission set up to investigate the violence.
Besides Oli, the travel ban was imposed on former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak and three officials.
The political crisis began following protests sparked by the Nepali government’s ban on 26 social media platforms on September 4.
Although the Oli government lifted the social media ban on September 8, the agitation evolved into a broader protest against alleged corruption and misgovernance. A day later, Oli resigned from his post. Read on.
Social media platform X said it was “deeply concerned” by the Karnataka High Court’s recent order dismissing its challenge to the Sahyog portal set up by the Union government. The platform added that it will appeal against the order to “defend free expression”.
Sahyog is a portal set up by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre to “streamline” content take down orders. X has described it as a “censorship portal” and claimed that the Information Technology Act does not contain any provision to create such a portal, or to require social platforms to appoint a nodal officer for it.
On Wednesday, the High Court upheld the portal’s validity and stressed the need for regulatory oversight of social media platforms operating in India. Read more.
The Union government announced two new railway connections between India and Bhutan. The links will be part of the first set of rail connectivity projects between the two countries.
The rail links will provide Bhutan access to 1.5 lakh km of the Indian railway network, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said.
While the first line links Assam’s Kokrajhar to Gelephu in Bhutan, the second will connect West Bengal’s Banarhat and Samtse. Read more.
