United States President Donald Trump on Monday said that he will be imposing a 100% tariff on films made outside the country.
“Our movie making business has been stolen from the United States of America, by other countries, just like stealing ‘candy from a baby’,” Trump said on social media.
The US president claimed that California “has been particularly hard hit” because of its “weak and incompetent governor”.
Several film studios are located in California, particularly in Los Angeles.
California Governor Gavin Newsom, from the Opposition Democratic party, is a Trump rival.
The levies will be introduced “to solve this long time, never ending problem”, the US president said.
Trump had in May threatened to impose a tariff on foreign films but had not provided any details.
“Other countries are offering all sorts of incentives to draw our filmmakers and studios away from the United States,” Trump had said at the time. “Hollywood, and many other areas within the USA, are being devastated.”
On Monday, Trump also said that he will impose “substantial tariffs” on countries that do not make their furniture in the US. He did not provide more details.
Trump added that the levies will make North Carolina, which he claimed had “completely lost” its furniture business to China and other countries, “great again”.
