Mumbai Police’s Crime Branch has arrested a 52-year-old wanted accused, Shabbir Sher Ali Merchant alias Shabbir Virji alias Sunny, who has a long history of burglary, theft, cheating, and gambling cases across Maharashtra and Goa.
Merchant, against whom 28 cases are registered, had been evading court hearings despite multiple summons. As a result, non-bailable and standing warrants were issued against him in several cases. He was traced to Vasai in Palghar district through technical surveillance and was subsequently taken into custody.
According to police, Merchant has nine cases registered at MRA Marg Police Station, 11 at Cuffe Parade, five at Marine Drive, and one each at Chembur and Manikpur (Palghar), along with another in Parvarim, Goa. He was also wanted in a 2004 case registered at MRA Marg Police Station under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
Following his arrest and a medical examination, he was handed over to the Cuffe Parade Police Station for further proceedings.
The operation was carried out by a team led by Police Inspector Ajay Kulkarni, along with Assistant Inspectors Salmankhan Pathan and Devidas Labde, and other police personnel.
