History sheeter held for chain snatching in Thane district


The police in Maharashtra`s Thane district have arrested a history-sheeter involved in chain-snatching incidents and recovered stolen gold worth Rs 5 lakh from him, an official said on Friday, reported news agency PTI.

The police zeroed in on the accused while probing into an incident in which a school teacher was robbed of her gold ornaments while on her way to work in Mumbra in the early hours of September 18, senior inspector Anil Shinde said, reported PTI.

The police identified the accused, Imran Aleem Khan alias “Toda”, (34) based on CCTV footage from the area, he said, reported PTI.

During interrogation, he confessed to the crime, and another chain-snatching case he was involved in was also detected, the official said.

The police have recovered gold ornaments worth Rs 5 lakh from the accused, he added.

Man held for duping couple with CM Relief Fund loan, railway job promises

In another case, a man was arrested for allegedly duping a couple after promising them a loan of Rs 10 lakh from the Chief Minister`s Relief Fund and a railway job for their nephew, a Mumbai police official said on Thursday, reported PTI.

The Marine Drive police station official identified the accused as Chembur-resident Samir Prakash Chundmunge, reported PTI.

“Chundmunge promised a couple that he would get them a Rs 10 lakh loan from the Chief Minister`s Relief Fund. He took Rs 50000 from them for this. He also took Rs 8.32 lakh from the nephew of the complainant after promising him to get a ticket collector`s job on the Vande Bharat express,” the official said, reported PTI.

“The couple realised they were cheated after none of the promises materialised and Chundmunge refused to give back the money. He was arrested for cheating, criminal breach of trust and other offences. A court remanded him in police custody till September 29. Further probe is underway,” the official informed.

Rs 17.4 lakh brown sugar seized in Palghar; auto-rickshaw driver held

Meanwhile, police have arrested a 24-year-old auto-rickshaw driver after seizing brown sugar valued at Rs 17.4 lakh from his possession in Maharashtra`s Palghar district, officials said on Thursday, reported PTI.

The man was found loitering on Tuesday near Capital Mall, on the east side of Nalasopara Railway Station.

During the search, 56.04 gm of brown sugar was recovered from the accused, identified as Samsad Jamshed Ali, hailing from Uttarakhand and residing in the Nalasopara area, the Achole police said, reported PTI.

The police later carried out a search of his residence, which resulted in the recovery of an additional 28 gm of the contraband, they said.

A case has been registered against the accused under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, the police added.
