
The Maharashtra state excise department has seized Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) worth Rs 1.96 crore from a truck in Thane district and arrested two persons for its illegal transportation, an official said on Friday, reported news agency PTI.
A flying squad of the state excise department`s Konkan division intercepted a Rajasthan-registered truck on Mumbra-Panvel Road on Wednesday, the official said.
Divisional Deputy Commissioner of State Excise Pradeep Pawar said that 1,560 boxes containing whiskey of different brands were seized from the vehicle, reported PTI.
Along with the liquor, the team also confiscated the truck, three mobile phones, and other material assets, he said, adding that the liquor was valued at Rs 1.96 crore.
The two occupants of the truck, Sahid Mehmuda Khan (49) and Pankaj Jagdish Saket (25), have been booked under relevant sections of the Maharashtra Prohibition Act, 1949, the official said, reported PTI.
He said that the department was now investigating the origin of the stock and intended customers.
History-sheeter held for chain snatching in Thane district
In another case, the police in Maharashtra`s Thane district have arrested a history-sheeter involved in chain-snatching incidents and recovered stolen gold worth Rs 5 lakh from him, an official said on Friday, reported PTI.
The police zeroed in on the accused while probing into an incident in which a school teacher was robbed of her gold ornaments while on her way to work in Mumbra in the early hours of September 18, senior inspector Anil Shinde said, reported PTI.
The police identified the accused, Imran Aleem Khan alias “Toda”, (34) based on CCTV footage from the area, he said, reported PTI.
During interrogation, he confessed to the crime, and another chain-snatching case he was involved in was also detected, the official said.
The police have recovered gold ornaments worth Rs 5 lakh from the accused, he added.
Meanwhile, four prisoners assaulted a policeman on the premises of a court in Maharashtra`s Thane district on Thursday, leaving him injured, an official said.
The incident took place in Kalyan when eight persons were being escorted to the Aadharwadi jail after they were produced in a court.
According to the official, a scuffle broke out over seating space. Suddenly, four prison inmates turned violent and attacked policeman Kishore Petare.
