The President of India appointed six Additional Judges of the Bombay High Court as Permanent Judges, exercising powers under Article 217(1) of the Constitution. Gavai, after assessing the performance and suitability of the judges concerned.

The judges who have now been confirmed as Permanent Judges are Justice Sanjay Anandrao Deshmulth, Justice Vrushali Vijay Joshi, Justice Abhay Jainarayanji Mantri, Justice Shyam Chhaganlal Chandak, Justice Neeraj Pradeep Dhote, and Justice Somasekhar Sundaresan. Their elevation brings additional stability to the High Court, which has one of the heaviest caseloads in the country.

Appointments of this kind play a crucial role in strengthening the judiciary. Additional Judges are generally appointed for a limited term, usually two years, before their work, integrity, and judgments are reviewed by the Collegium. Only after this rigorous evaluation are they recommended for permanent status. The government’s acceptance of the Collegium’s advice in this instance underscores the importance of judicial independence and the established procedure for such confirmations.

The Bombay High Court, being one of the busiest high courts in India, has long grappled with the challenge of a large number of pending cases.
