Eight persons were injured in Maddur town of Karnataka’s Mandya district after clashes broke out between Hindu and Muslim groups on Sunday night during a procession to immerse an idol of the deity Ganesh, The Indian Express reported.

Superintendent of Police Mallikarjun Baladandi said that 21 persons have been detained in connection with the clashes, according to The Hindu.

Prohibitory orders banning the gathering of five or more persons were imposed in the area and will remain in force till Tuesday.

According to the police, both groups threw stones at each other after the procession reached near a mosque in the town’s Ram Rahim Nagar.

The situation deteriorated after members of the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and the Bajrang Dal arrived in the area, The Indian Express quoted unidentified police officials as saying.

Later, members of the Ganesh Visarjan Samiti, the body that organised the immersion procession, staged protests in front of another mosque, demanding action.

Additional forces, including six platoons of the Karnataka State Reserve Police, have been deployed to maintain law and order in Maddur, The Hindu quoted Baladandi as saying.

Despite the prohibitory orders, on Monday, Hindutva organisations held protests in Maddur town and demanded action against those who threw stones at the procession, ANI reported.

In 2024, clashes broke out in Nagamangala town of Mandya district during Ganesh idol immersion after arguments between the members of the two communities near a mosque.

Stone-throwing, arson and protests were also reported, after which 46 persons were detained.
