Lookout notice issued for actor Shilpa Shetty husband Raj Kundra

The Mumbai Police has issued a lookout circular against actor Shilpa Shetty and her husband Raj Kundra in connection with a Rs 60 crore fraud case, PTI reported on Friday. This would prevent them from leaving the country.

The circular is used by law enforcement authorities to check whether a person leaving the country is wanted by the police.

The action was taken in a case registered against the couple at Juhu police station in August for allegedly duping businessman Deepak Kothari in a Rs 60-crore deal, according to reports.

Kothari, director of Lotus Capital Financial Services, has alleged that between 2015 and 2023, Shetty and Kundra diverted funds he had given them for business expansion, for personal purposes, the Hindustan Times reported.

The first information report in the matter says that Kothari was introduced to Kundra through a mutual acquaintance. He was informed that the couple held about 88% shares in a company named Best Deal TV.

Kothari claimed that Kundra had initially sought a loan of Rs 75 crore at 12% annual interest rate, the Hindustan Times reported. However, Kothari claimed he was later persuaded to treat the transaction as an investment in the firm to avoid taxation and was promised better returns, the newspaper reported.

Kothari said that he transferred about Rs 60 crore in tranches in 2015, India Today reported. However, he soon found out that insolvency proceedings had been initiated against the company for allegedly defaulting on an agreement with another investor.

Shetty resigned as the director of the company in 2016.

Kothari said that his repeated attempts to recover the money failed, which led him to file a police complaint.

The FIR against the couple was filed under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to dishonest misappropriation of property and criminal breach of trust, India Today reported.

The lookout notice was issued by the Economic Offences Wing of the Mumbai Police as Shetty and Kundra, a businessperson, make frequent international trips, PTI quoted an unidentified officer as saying.
